Hong Kong Translation Society Presents: “Translation and the Professions” Symposium

November 14, 2016 GTC

2016 is a remarkable year for Hong Kong Translation Society (HKTS).  On 12 November 2016, HKTS was proud to present “Translation and the Professions” Symposium to celebrate its 45 years and 20 years of the Translation Quarterly.  The Symposium attracted over 140 participants to the lecture theatre at Chow Yei Ching Building, The University of Hong Kong.

Professor Leo Chan, president of the HKTS kicked off the symposium by his welcome remarks by giving more information about HKTS to the audience.  I was impressed by the mission of HKTS, which is “to cater to the needs of a changing society and to promote cultural exchanges and to make Hong Kong playing a key position in Asia as an international hub for business and communication”.

We then had the keynote speech by Mr. Rimsky Yuen Kwok-keung (SC, JP, Secretary for Justice, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region), on Language and the Rule of Law; followed by featured speech by Professor Chan Sin-wai (School of Humanities and Social Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen), on Technology and the Profession of Translation; Dr. Steven Luk Kwok-sun (ex-Chairman, The Hong Kong Publishing Professional Society; ex-General Manager and Chief Editor, The Commercial Press HK Ltd.), on Publishing Chinese Literature and Classics in English in Hong Kong: Perspectives from a Retired Publisher; and finally Ms. Melissa Kaye Pang (Vice-President, The Law Society of Hong Kong), on Legal Translation in Hong Kong.

GTC is very honored to be the logistics sponsor of this event and I wish HKTS is set to scale new heights of achievement in the future.  Happy anniversary!
